Nerding it up

I like pfSense as my firewall and have found it to be very powerful and user-friendly. I wanted to do some network analyzing via Ethereal, but found myself limited. pfSense doesn’t have any C compiler, GUI OS (KDE or Gnome), and is as much a pain to work with as any other stripped-down and highly-specialized flavor of linux. But I came up with a quick and easy work-around.

First, I run tcpdump (included w/ pfSense):

tcpdump -s 512 -w foo.cap host gateway

I then download the capture file to my PC where I open the file with Ethereal (which can read tcpdump logs). And, boom, easily analyzed and graphical data!

Scanners

11:48 am

I picked up a PRO-97 1000-Channel Triple Trunking Handheled Scanner from RadioShack.

It runs for about 50 hours on 4 AA batteries, or can be plugged in with an AC adapter. The scanner can be hooked up to a PC or another scanner in order to share and download frequencies. The store I purchased it from programmed the scanner with many of the local police, fire, EMS, airport and other miscellaneous frequencies used in Sedgwick county from their store PC. This programming includes labels, so when a conversation is picked up, the scanner displays who the frequency or talkgroup ID (for trunked radio systems) belongs to. For example, the scanner picks up a conversation for the Wichita Police Department, east patrol, and would display “Wichita PD - WPD East.”

I’m currently listening to chatter concerning a train derailment on the south side of town.

Backups Are For Nerds

I was playing around with the MySQL database that WordPress uses and I messed up some things.  I’m just gonna have to start over. Kansas Bebop v2.0 or something, I guess.
