Work on Saturday went slow, like most holiday weekends, and was a welcome break from the summer time rush. Jenny and I had dinner with Jenny’s mom, then we went out until about 1am touring Wichita on my scooter. It was a cool evening, by far the lowest temperature since June. Sunday started with me sleeping in until 10:30am, which I’m sure is an all-time record for my morning-loving self. Jenny and I then met with Cary and Aubrey at Saigon for lunch before heading to Botanica.

Afterwards we headed to my soon-to-be former apartment to get Kim’s scooter and drop it off at her apartment. She’s going to leave it outside of her apartment, which I don’t think is very safe, but thankfully she feels like she can take over insurance, tags, and other costs of having the bike. Already in the late afternoon, Jenny and I went back to her house to move an old sofa, recliner, and end table to her mom’s house to make room for my furniture. We then packed furniture from my apartment into my car and Jenny’s truck with the help of Cary and Aubrey. At around 11:00pm we quit and Jenny, Aubrey and I headed to meet some friends at Club Glacier to watch a drag queen show.

I slept in again on Monday since it was a holiday from work. Around 1:30pm Jenny, Cary and I went back to my apartment to finish cleaning it out. Cary left to take his son, Travis, home for a nap later in the afternoon. Jenny and I finished around 9pm. I’m now officially moved out!

The best show, on any media, is probably This American Life. Here in Wichita, it’s carried by NPR on Saturdays. Each week’s theme has a few true short stories that are incredibly interesting. This is difficult for me to convey. Describing something as “interesting” is like describing the color “red” to a blind person. The show’s website even admits it’s difficult to describe the show’s success. It’s funny. It’s emotional. It’s many hidden bits of information that no one else really knew much about. Last week’s episode is a great example.

Listen to it here. But definitely listen to act one. You’ll hang on every word.

Act One. Froggy Goes A-Courtin’. The story of a series of misunderstandings with very dire consequences. Shaheen was stopped by the police, who looked at what was in his car and before Shaheen knew it, he’d come to the attention of some of the highest ranking officials in the Defense Department. Gabrielle Galanek talked to Shaheen and his girlfriend Molly about what happened.

Shaheen went from being a bored artist in Santa Fe to a threat on Donald Rumsfeld’s desk.

I picked up a PRO-97 1000-Channel Triple Trunking Handheled Scanner from RadioShack.

It runs for about 50 hours on 4 AA batteries, or can be plugged in with an AC adapter. The scanner can be hooked up to a PC or another scanner in order to share and download frequencies. The store I purchased it from programmed the scanner with many of the local police, fire, EMS, airport and other miscellaneous frequencies used in Sedgwick county from their store PC. This programming includes labels, so when a conversation is picked up, the scanner displays who the frequency or talkgroup ID (for trunked radio systems) belongs to. For example, the scanner picks up a conversation for the Wichita Police Department, east patrol, and would display “Wichita PD - WPD East.”

I’m currently listening to chatter concerning a train derailment on the south side of town.
